Overreliance on Medication

Overreliance on medication because of the exclusion of other elements of multimodal therapy can be a problem.

Multimodal treatment is optimal for patients with ADHD, and PCCs must help parents and patients understand the importance of all treatment components, including medication and effective school and psychosocial interventions including parent behavior management strategies and training interventions. Response to these treatment modalities should be monitored with follow-up face-to-face visits as well as DSM-based rating scales from 2 or more major settings and feedback about progress in school.

It can be difficult to access resources for school support and parent behavior management training. PCCs can assist patients/families by helping them understand how to advocate for these treatments within the schools and in their community.
