4–5 years of age
|
Evidence-based parent training in behavior management (PTBM) and/or behavioral classroom interventions as the first line of treatment, if available; medication may be indicated in certain circumstances.

6–11 years of age
|
FDA-approved medications along with PTBM and/or behavioral classroom interventions (preferably both) are first-line therapies. The combination of these therapies together are more likely to be optimal.

|
12–18 years of age
|
FDA-approved medications with the adolescent’s assent and optimally combined with evidence-based training interventions and/or behavioral interventions.

Note: For school-aged children and adolescents, educational interventions and individualized instructional supports in the school setting including school environment, class placement, instructional placement, and behavioral supports are a necessary part of the treatment plan and often include an IEP or a 504 plan.
