Contraindications and Precautions for Influenza Immunization
Contraindications to Receiving TIV:
According to cdc.gov/vaccines, children who should not be vaccinated with TIV include the following:
- Infants younger than 6 months
- Severe allergic reaction (eg, anaphylaxis) after a previous dose of any influenza vaccine or vaccine component including egg protein
Precautions for Receiving TIV:
- Children with moderately or severe illnesses should wait till they recover, but minor illnesses are not a contraindication.
Note: Recent evidence does not show an increased risk of recurrent Guillain Barre syndrome with influenza immunization, and this should not be a contraindication to the vaccine
