Food desert
A food desert is an area where people live more than 1 mile from a supermarket or large grocery store if in an urban area, or more than 10 miles from a supermarket or large grocery store if in a rural area. Note that food deserts may also be referred to as “low-income, low-access areas,” “low food access areas,” or “food apartheid,” which highlights the inequities and systemic issues leading to these regions.
