Medication
In general, medication is used to treat specific mental health conditions, such as ADHD, major depressive disorder, and anxiety disorders.
Ideally, medication is used in combination with therapy to help patients and their families develop skills for managing distress, reducing impairment, and developing healthy habits. In some situations, patients may be unable to access therapy due to mental health workforce shortages, limited access, or other barriers. In these situations, physicians may prescribe medications after an evidence-informed discussion about potential benefits and risks, helping to reduce potential barriers when possible, and developing a plan to monitor symptoms and potential adverse effects.
