Apply fluoride varnish
Key points to remember about applying fluoride varnish:
- Fluoride varnish protects teeth from decay and is effective in reducing caries progression by enhancing remineralization of enamel and inhibiting bacterial metabolism. The varnish remains in prolonged contact with the enamel surface.
- Apply fluoride varnish to the primary teeth of all infants and children starting at the age of primary tooth eruption. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends fluoride varnish application as a caries preventive service in the primary care setting to age 6. Be aware that Bright Futures includes age 6 in its recommendations concerning fluoride application.
- PPHPs should consider applying varnish to children greater than 6 years who do not receive regular dental visits. (Check your state’s guidance regarding insurance reimbursement.)
- It important for the pediatric medical home to fully embrace varnish application and incorporate oral health into routine visits. Review the training resources and videos on fluoride varnish application presented in this EQIPP course and noted in Resources tab.
