Provide oral health anticipatory guidance

Key points to remember about providing anticipatory guidance:

  • Provide age-appropriate oral health anticipatory guidance during all health supervision visits and during other visit encounters as appropriate. Consider discussion points obtained during the risk assessment or from the previsit questionnaire, Bright Futures anticipatory guidance recommendations, and the oral health topics presented in this EQIPP course. Consider sharing the resources presented in this EQIPP course and noted in Resources tab with patients/families.
  • Be sure to address the language, literacy level and cultural concerns and issues of your patient population.
  • Patient/family outcomes may be improved when a strength-based approach to discussions is employed, focusing on the patient/family’s strengths, abilities and resources to address their own health needs.
