Strength-based Approach
A strength-based approach is one that focuses on a patient’s or family’s strengths and builds on these strengths.
The goals of a strength-based approach are to:
- Raise your awareness of specific family strengths, ie, social connection, concrete support, knowledge of parenting and child development, etc. See Strengthening Families 101 from the Center for the Study of Social Policy and the CDC’s Parent Training Programs: Insight for Practitioners to learn more.
- Find positive motivation to individually take on healthy family behaviors that support a child’s healthy development.
- Help families and children connect with existing community resources when appropriate.
