The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports the following guidelines regarding substance use prevention, detection, assessment, and intervention practices. These guidelines provide a standard of care to improve the health and safety of adolescents.*

*Note: This course is intended for the guidance of patients 11–21 years. The term “adolescent” includes early through late adolescence, as noted in the Bright Futures guidelines:

• Early Adolescence Visits (11- through 14-year-old visits)

• Middle Adolescence Visits (15- through 17-year-old visits)

• Late Adolescence Visits (18- through 21-year-old visits)
