Addressing Vaping and Tobacco Use in Youth and Young Adults
Key points to remember about addressing vaping and tobacco use in youth and young adults
- Use a model such as A.C.T. to ask, counsel, and treat youth who are vaping or using tobacco.
- When asking patients 11+ about tobacco use, use a self-administered screening tool, such as the SSHADESS assessment.
- Ensure patients are comfortable speaking with you by educating parents about the upcoming confidential discussion at the yearly visit prior to the first confidential screening.
- When a patient wants to quit, refer them to behavioral support resources and optionally provide NRT.
