Screening for Tobacco Smoke Exposure and Vape Aerosol Exposure

Key points to remember about tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) and vape aerosol exposure

  • Your practice should use a program such as CEASE to:
    • Ask family members and caregivers whether your patient lives with anyone who uses tobacco or nicotine products.
    • Assist family members and caregivers with quitting and establishing a tobacco-free home and car.
    • Refer interested family members and caregivers to cessation resources.
  • Use techniques such as motivational interviewing when asking family members and caregivers about your patient’s TSE. Reinforce the idea that children need to breathe clean air all the time and TSE from smoking or vaping aerosols are harmful for a child’s health.
  • When a family member or caregiver wants to quit, refer them to behavioral support resources and optionally provide nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
