Diagnostic developmental evaluation
A diagnostic developmental evaluation should be pursued when a child screens positive for a developmental concern. This evaluation provides further prognostic information to identify specific developmental disorder(s) affecting the child and allows for a prompt initiation of specific and appropriate interventions such as, health services, specialist referrals, early intervention (EI) and/or early childhood education services.
This evaluation may occur at a different visit or in a series of visits in the primary care medical home or in a different setting by developmental or other medical professionals. The visits should be scheduled as quickly as possible, and professionals should coordinate activities and share findings. Tracking of referrals should be incorporated to ensure follow-up.
