Key components of birth history and family health and social history
When caring for a child with prenatal opioid exposure, the key components of the birth history and family health and social history may be described in the family’s plan of safe/supportive care, and may include the following:

  • Infant birth history
    • In-utero exposure to opioids and opioid medications (prescribed and not prescribed)
    • In-utero exposure to other substances or medications, such as, alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, amphetamines, SSRIs, etc
    • Infectious disease (HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, CMV, etc)
  • Family/birth parent health history
    • Substance use
    • Mental health conditions
    • Exposure to trauma and adverse experiences
    • Infectious disease
  • Family social history
    • Family structure
    • Cultural beliefs
