Key components of birth history and family health and social history
When caring for a child with prenatal opioid exposure, the key components of the birth history and family health and social history may be described in the family’s plan of safe/supportive care, and may include the following:
- Infant birth history
- In-utero exposure to opioids and opioid medications (prescribed and not prescribed)
- In-utero exposure to other substances or medications, such as, alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, amphetamines, SSRIs, etc
- Infectious disease (HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, CMV, etc)
- Family/birth parent health history
- Substance use
- Mental health conditions
- Exposure to trauma and adverse experiences
- Infectious disease
- Family social history
- Family structure
- Cultural beliefs
